We think historical photos of Dana Point are fun. South Orange County development has changed the landscape significantly over the years. This page goes back in time, to a period when the area was home to Killer Dana, a surf break off Dana Point before the Dana Point Harbor was constructed in the 1960’s. Before that, we all heard stories of how cattlemen threw tanned hides off the cliffs of Dana Point to clipper ships who took them back to the east coast. Historical photos dana point – beach house rental provide the backdrop for the House located on Doheny Beach, in Dana Point.
The first photo shows Dana Point before the harbor, and while San Juan Creek was an estuary. Water from the San Juan Creek has been used for generations to plant crops, grow cattle and sustain. Otis Chandler, publisher of the LA Times who married the queen of California cotton purchased the point in the early part of the 20th century. In the foreground of the picture are trailers on the beach in Doheny State Park. Donated by the Forster Family, the state park is still a favorite RV destination, and for day use to the south. The beach house rental is the fifth house from the southern end of Doheny State Park.
The Dana Villa, the old Richfield sign, and Coast Highway, the only way to get from Los Angeles to San Diego before the interstate.
The last picture shown is a menu from the Captains Anchorage, a place I worked all through college. It served king crab legs and was located in the city of Dana Point. A lot of local surfers washed dishes and bussed tables there so have some money to be able to go surfing……
